Product Description
Moutarde Violette is made from mustard, wine, vinegar and grape must cooked from ripe black grapes. Its mixture of sweetness, sharpness and acidity make this mustard an excellent accompaniment to healthy foods such as sausages, game and smoked meats.
In the 14th century, remembering that the famous purple mustard originated in Corrèze, where it was born, Pope Clement VI summoned a mustard maker to Avignon. Messire Jaubertie, from Turenne, was appointed to make Violette Mustard, years later he was named “the pope’s master mustard maker”.
From then on, the fame of purple mustard, brewed and sold by various liqueurists and grocers in Brive-la-Gaillarde until the 19th century, became a local tradition.
This traditional specialty survived only due to the dedication and determination of Elie Denoix, followed by his son and granddaughter. Currently, Moutarde Violette is exported to several countries where it is recognized as a delicacy of French culinary excellence.
The name itself comes from its color. Made from grape must and fine mustard seeds, this mustard is distinguished by a peculiar marriage of sweet and spicy flavors.
